One of the greatest - yet most obscure - bands of the mid-to-late '60s was a band called Love. Headed by founding member Arthur Lee (who died last year), this band had a strange mystique about it. For one thing, they were one of the first interracial bands, and were "underground" sensations of the Sunset Strip scene, yet were practically unknown outside southern California. Their few albums were critically praised, but the group ultimately disbanded before achieving mainstream success. Their legacy included 3 minor, yet classic, hits; "Little Red Book" and "7 and 7 Is" were predecessors of early punk, and the ethereal "Alone Again Or", my personal favorite.
This band is legendary amongst those who really know the history of rock music. Check 'em out!

I wouldn't say they're "unknown," just some of the "lesser known": The Jam, Spirit, The Guess Who, Traffic, King Crimson, The Average White Band, Buffalo Springfield, The Hollies, The Outlaws, Procol Harum, The Zombies, Renaissance, Roxy Music, Translator, The Yardbirds.
