There are two basic kind of meteorites. The metallic ones are primarily iron and nickel and are magnetic.

The second type are carbonaceous chondrites, or stony meteorites. They can resemble coal, but more often look like a chunk of rock.

Meteorites do NOT resemble coal; the current theory is that coal is compressed plant and animal life; hence, it exists only on earth.
They can be magnetic; most meteorites contain nickel and/or iron; some contain valuable gems.

Most are of iron, a magnetic element and they are black and charred.
