sheesh, it seems like everyone I know has been out of the country in the last six months. Where are they getting money to do all this?! Not all of their parents are filthy rich! And I would LOVE to go somewhere, so someone please tell me what I'm missing! :)

Most of these kids are getting some to most of the money from their parents. However they are also traveling on the cheap. Instead of staying at a $200 a night hotel, they are staying in a $50 a night hostel. Most working people don't have a lot of time in country so they spend extra to fly between distant cities, students have nothing but time so they go cheap by rail. They don't eat in expensive restaurants and instead from cheap stands or bar food. You can save 50% on a trip if you are willing to live out of a backpack.
