When you choose to battle it out, you are in for a long drawn dragged out case. Lawyers are paid for their time so don't expect it cheap. But it begs the question: if you have low income, what are you battling for except for custody? YOu have to pick your battle wisely.

Look up the website of the local bar association of your county. They usually offer family lawyers for 1/2 hr of free consultation for about $30-40 (the assoc gets the money). You get to learn different views and how that lawyer operates instead of looking one up from the Yellow Pages not knowing how much you'd be out. You can check out more than 1 lawyer to get a feel for things.

The purpose is to learn the ropes before you commit to one lawyer because almost all of them want retainer fees of $2000-4000. If you are in a battle, you have to choose a feisty lawyer who would go after the other side. Some lawyers are into settlement. So pick the one who tells you what are your chances.

For less combative divorces, each side would be lucky to pay less than $10k but battles usually cost $20-30k

Call the School of Law, at the University of Houston, and ask if they do pro bono (which means free) cases.

If they don't, ask if they can refer you to someone that can help.
