series is when one thing happens after another, after another , after another
In parallel, two things can happen at once.
If your house was wired in series, you would have to have all the appliances on at once for the electricity to get to the next one.
with parallel the electricity can go around appliances on another pathway

Parallel circuits are connected in a way that cutting off one element of the circuit does not create an open circuit. This is very useful for the circuits in your home. If one appliance is turned off, other appliances can still operate because they can still create a complete circuit. This is opposed to a series circuit where all elements are connected end to end and if one element goes out, all of them stop working. Think of Christmas lights for the series circuit, if one burns out they all shut off.

Parallel circuits help your house conform to your city's building code, which makes it insurable and thus possible for you to take out a home loan.
That's one way of looking at it..

The advantage is when one circuit fails the others will continue to work. As opposed to series circuits if there is a failure any where the whole thing fails.

parallel circuits are circuits that arent connected in a row. the power source is split and wires going to all appliances at the same time not one at a time. if it was in series everytime you turned off a light everything in you whole house would turn off because it is in one straight line. if it splits when you turn off a light there is still the flow of electrons going elsewhere!

a parrallel circuit is a ciruit that spits into two different paths. therefore, when one path is cut off, the other path continues. where as in a series ciruit everything is dependent upon eachother so if u disconnect one part in the circuit the whole thing shuts off.
this is why home are mainly built with parrallel ciruits (i.e. lighting fixtures)
