Well, I'm a Varsity Cheerleader at my high school. But uh, it depends if you want competitions where you compete for Nationals, you need a lot of tumbling experience, upper body strength, endurance, a really loud voice, TONS OF SPIRIT but for like JV or Freshman, you need endurance, upper body strength, some flexiblity, a loud voice, and you just need to have fun.

For my school's varsity it's not the experience that you have as a cheerleader, it's the way you preform the tasks they give you to do. The only thing you will probably need experience in is tumbling, but you can join a tumbling class which will prepare you.

Minus tumbling, everything else you can learn rather quickly with just a few months of practice.
Tumbling however, is where it can be problematic. If cheerleading is something you really want to do, then you should check into cheer classes.
Just remember that if you really want to be a cheerleader, classes alone won't help. You will need to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!
Good luck! :)

Usually you have to have some prior experience. Unless you are a dancer or gymnast and are basically making a lateral transition, it can be really tough to get into the sport that late.
But it's always worth trying out because you never know.
