I'm not going anytime soon but I am trying to save up. I'm big into WW2 and I know places have like set uptravel tours but I'd like to search the stuff on my own. What is the best way to travel around?

People are going to tell you to get a Rail-pass and that is true. If you plan to travel from city to city to city it's the cheapest and easiest way to get around. However...

You want to look at WWII battle-sites and that is a little different. Many of them are not on the beaten path, or at least a bit too far out of town. If that is what you want to do, then you need a rental car. It's easy to get around, the only problem is gas is very expensive. That is partially off set by the fact that they use smaller cars and shorter distances. Still that will be the best way to get around between smaller cities and battle sites quickly.

With a rail-pass you travel from major and minor cities pretty easily, however you are often looking for villages and towns. You really might be better off just getting a rental car for the entire trip instead of one at each major city. Cuts down on doubling up costs.

Something to think about at least.

Probably rent a car if you want to travel by yourself. A good place to go would be Normandy in France, to visit the D-Day Beaches and the cemetery there. It's an awesome experience and so eye-opening.
