job application online and it says my ss# has to look like this XXX XX XXXX

They are just using the x's to show you the format, i.e. 3 digits - 2 digits - 4 digits. You don't actually have to make it look like x's. Just put in the numbers.

Answer 1 is right, the x's are just the format they want. To make it more clear, think about a date. You could write May 7, 2007, or 20070507 or 5-7-07. But if next to the date field they put "mm/dd/yyyy" you know they want the month in 2 digits (05 not just 5) then a slash then a 2 digit day then slash then 4 digit year (2007 not just 07) So you'd write it as 05/07/2007 to match the format.
