Clean the throttle plate and bore area as well as the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve to remove carbon deposits and improve your idle to help prevent stalling. Make sure your ignition tuneup is good. Try some Chevron concentrated Techron fuel system cleaner in your fuel tank. If you've ever run out of fuel and pumped the tank dry, replace the fuel filter and replace it anyways if it's never been replaced in 8 years since the car was new.

i used to own a chevy and when mine started to do that the fuel filter was clogged. chevy uses an inline external fuel filter that can be changed rather cheaply. i would start there. the cap you're talking about is probably the distributor cap but if there was a problem with the dist. cap it would show up regardless of vehicle speed. it would show up based on engine load. aka how hard you pushed the gas and whether or not the a\c was on things like that which make your engine work harder

If you drive in stop and go traffic a lot, then a couple of things need to be checked, more than likely you have build up in the idle-air motor, the plate on the throttle body, needs cleaning, and the air filter,is not a K&N,and check for oil deposits.there is a fuel system treatment,GM does not approve of any cleaners except theres, not unusual, but this time I would use theirs.part# 88861011,ad to fuel every oil change see what happens,if it works go with it.

Sounds like it could be one of the following to me:
Clutch
Fuel Injection/Injectors (if you have it)
Something could be wrong with an idle setting
Get it checked out by a reputable (read skilled and won't say whatever to make a buck) garage or dealership.

sounds like the tps (throttle position sensor) have a reliable mechanic do a diagnosis of the OBD2 computer, then you will know all the codes and problems.

I am not sure what is wrong but try to go to a professional. Don't go to a corner repair shop. They will tell you any thing to get money.
