Because the people who first colonized the 13 colonies were looking to get away from debt, get away from structure, get away from restrictive churches and restrictive legislatures, they were looking to get away from people who would tell them how to dress, how to talk, how to think. These individualists and others like them then moved further into the back country to get away from the American civilization of the 13 colonies and they continued moving west.

We have won land by war, by purchase, and by right of possession.

This BS about causing extinction of the natives is from ignorant neaderthals who have never actually read a history book and are just spouting anti-american PC propoganda. There is nothing that the Europeans did to the natives that they had not done to each other long before the evil white American man arrived on these shores.

A mixture of war, ethnic cleansing and purchase. The Americans ended up with an Empire like the Russian Empire which was mainly formed on one continental land mass.
New York became the Empire State and its highest building was the Empire State Building.
The people who were ethnically cleansed (native americans) have never received reparations for their suffering.

Americans simply kept moving west across the North American Continent...buying territory (like the Louisiana Purchase) or winning it in war (like the Texas territory). Then as the areas became more populated, they applied for statehood through the procedure laid out in the Constitution.
