Definately pads. But if you really need a tampon, like for excersising or swimming or something, I would recommend that you use natural tampons. You can buy them at any grocery store and almost any drug store. Look for the white and yellow box in the tampons area. The only reason I recommend this is becuase regular tampons carry bleech and other artificial synthetics in them which can be harmful to the body, especially at such a young age. The natural tampons do not have any bleech in them, and made of 100% pure cotton. There is much less risk of getting an infection with them, but NEVER wear one or a pad for more than 8 hours. All you're doing is increasing your risk of infection.

I'm a medical students almost done with medical school so you Can of course trust my answer, i think you should use a pad rather then a a tampon because there both safe but your still a little young for a tampon, but if you want to use one go ahead try both and see which one you like better it's up to you,by the way if you use a tampon take it out or switch about every four hours

Well I am 13 years old and I just started using tampons because it's summer and I want to be able to go swimming and stuff. I have only had my period 4 times, so I'd say if you think you are ready, go for it! Tampons are more comfortable and a lot less messy. If you don't feel you are up for the challenge, stick with pads. They get the job done just fine!

I'm 17 and when I first started I used pads. I play sports so I had to start using tampons. After I tried a tampon for the first time I have never gone back to pads. You have to get used to tampons...the first time is the hardest!

I am not an expert and I could be wrong, but at such a young age I would stay with pads. Tampons have to be correctly inserted or they are uncomfortable or even painful and won't protect properly. You also have to remember to take them out, and silly as it may sound, there have been plenty a women who have forgotten (or can't remember, me included). Not being careful can cause things like toxic shock. The more I write...the more I'm convinced 10 is definitely too young!

I started at 11 and have only used tampons. It took me a few times to get the tampon in comfortably, but after my second period I was fine. I'm 24 by the way.

I would suggest starting with a pad. Tampons can be dangerous. There is risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome if they aren't used carefully. If you want to use a tampon, wait until a weekend day when you don't have school and try it out at home. If you are comfortable with it and don't have any problems then go for it.

You really should be getting your parents and doctors advice on this rather than from some weirdo on the net! And 10 - 12 is awfully young to be actually getting a period...
That being said its best to start with panty liners or if you really want to use tampons there are special ones on the market for young girls, being that they are smaller and slimmer.
Remember to wash your hands before and after.

Pad, but you'll eventually want to start using tampons when you get more comfortable with having your period.
