Well, I would definitely pick a cat, but that's not my answer because it's a biased response. On one hand, don't believe what people say about all cats being independent and not really loving you. Cats can be and are very affectionate and grieve for losses just like dogs do.
As you know from everyone else's mass posts about maintenance, cats are generally easier to clean up/care for but something I did not see here was that cats' instinct tells them what to do with their poo, as they are predator animals. By the way, not only should you consider these things, but see if you can reserve an animal at a shelter so you can get to know it and decide if a cat is right for you.
On the other hand, dogs are good companions although quite expensive. If you are considering a dog, think about you and your parents' budget. And if you can be determined and motivated to train her/him. Because if s/he's not going to get the proper care and attention, forget about it.
Finally, consider what your pets at home would think. Will they be neglected? Will they consider this new family member a threat? Will they be hostile towards it, perhaps even attacking it? Is this best for ALL the pets' lives? And think about why you want this pet. After considering all this, I hope you choose the right choice :)

Cats are independent, clean (for the most part), less expensive and low maintenance compared to a dog. Cats clean themselves so the need for bathing them is practically none. Dogs on the other hand need regular baths and occasional professional grooming ($$$). Cats don't need to be walked or let out to go potty, they use a litter box, but the downside to the litter box is that they need cleaned daily and can make even the cleanest home smell bad. Vet care for cats is typically less expensive than it is for dogs. If you're looking for a "pal", a pet to go for car rides and walks in the park, then it's a dog you want, they're definitely better companions (in my opinion). In my experience cats are standoff-ish and not as eager to be around people as dogs are, but don't get me wrong, I've had a couple of lovey-dovey cats (both males). I think before you choose a pet you should consider how much time and money you have to invest and make sure you're making the best choice for you and the animal.

Whatever you decide, don't buy a pet. Go to your local shelter and adopt one. You will most likely be saving a life by doing so.

If you have the time to dedicate in training a dog to go to the bathroom outside and are willing to get up early in the morning to walk him, even on weekends then a dog is for you. Dogs need a lot emotionally.

If you are not home a lot and really don't have a lot of time to dedicate to a dog, a cat would be your answer. Cats are housebroken easily. You show the kitten the litter box, put her in, take her two front paws and show her a digging motion. That's it, you kitty is housebroken.

Man this is really hard! I love both cats and dogs but it's your opinion. Both dogs and cats tear up the furniture and pee around the house if not "potty trained" Pets are a huge responsibility i know this cuz I have 2 cats 2 dogs and a bird. But if your willing to give ur pet love, care,a and attention then i say get a cat and a dog. No problem! Best of luck ;)

If you have the time to pay attention to a puppy, then get a puppy. They need a lot of personal attention in the first year. A kitten would be my personal choice only because cats don't have to be entertained or trained, they are pretty self-sufficient.

depends on where you live and how much you travel. i grew up with dogs but i live in the city and i have cats now. i don't have to get up and walk them in the morning or rush home at night after work. you can leave them overnight and if you are away on vacation its easy to get someone to come in and feed them. cats are very clean and easy to train (i have indoor cats which i suggest for cat owners for many reasons).

either way pets bring a lot of love in your life but it is a huge commitment so think carefully before you decide.

p.s. litter does not smell if you keep the box clean (lazy people out there)!

If you are home alot and have alot of time to train the puppy, then I would go with a dog. If you arent home alot and don't have the time to train then a kitten is better. Cats tend to be easier to house train and are more self sufficient while dogs need alot of attention and need to be let out of the house often.

A Kitten because they live longer lives than dogs. My cat is 17 years old and my first cat lived yo be 21! Plus puppies are high maintenance and dirty. Cats are clean and cool.

Well it depends what do u want? A puppy is more of a companion animal it will go all over the place with you and their really fun and cute. Kittens don't really follow you their more of a all on their own kind of thing, but their really cute. I personally pick puppies cause theyre adventurous, cute, fun, and caring.

Cats are better pets because they don't wake you up at night to go to the bathroom. You don't have to take them for walks. If you go away for a few days you don't need anyone to watch them. Unlike dogs, cats won't eat everything in their bowl at once and lastly they don't shed as much hair.
