There are programs out there that will boot off of a CD and will let you search through password hashes until it finds the right string of characters, OR lets you erase it and start off with a blank password

Yes, there's a special version of Linux out there that will read the hard disk, and clean out the admin password. You need physical access to the machine, and be able to boot the pc from floppy disk, usb key or cd rom, but if you can, it takes about 2 mins to log on as the administrator. I've used it on NT4, W2K and XP (also SP2). Not tried Vista yet.

If you know the main Administrator's password itself, then other accounts under the administrators group may be set passwordless from this one. Otherwise, if the main Administrator account's password is unknown to you, it would be difficult or imposible to get into it from within Windows.

it depends on the version of xp - but sometimes if you go into safemode you can remove the password by going into control panel - users - and then remove the password that way.
