Do: Go to the North Coast. (Dominican Republic)
The DR isn't just package trips and all-inclusive resorts. While there isn't much in the way of hostels, there is a plethora of cheap hotels and transportation is quite easy and quite inexpensive. You can find this all at the north coast, fairly far from the majority of the resorts
Don't: Go to a bar upon arriving in Sosúa at 4 a.m. (Dominican Republic)
The combination of sleep deprivation and alcohol leads you to do bad things, plus they don't take kindly to people sleeping on the beach
Do: Windsurf, surf, and kayak in Cabarete (Dominican Republic)
Playa Cabarete is a decent beach, but it's a better place to rent a board and go crazy than to lie there sunbathing. At night they put chairs out on the beach and you can go from bar to bar, or just hang out on the beach. Swimming is possible, but be careful.
Don't: Take your backpack or bag on a gua-gua. (Dominican Republic)
Though useful for day trips, apparently a bag takes up an extra seat and so must be charged for three extra seats--and by seat, I mean, 'the tiniest amount of space a person can fit in.'
Do: Take the bus system.
Caribe Tours, the bus company, is fairly amazing--tickets are much less than 10$ U.S., even cross country, and the buses are air-conditioned and extremely comfortable. Definitely a good place to sleep.
Do: Explore Nagua
If you take the buses to the Samana Peninsula, (and you should), you will probably need to transfer in Nagua. Though it's a dusty, unremarkable town, do explore and find Cafe America, order the 2-dollar special of the day, and realize that rice and beans really do have the capacity to be amazing.
Do: Go to Las Terrenas
If you don't like snorkeling or scuba-diving, wander the shops, look at the galleries, hear more French than Spanish, and explore the large beachfront cemetary.
Do: Go to Playa Grande
Take a gua-gua from Rio San Juan. Idyllic, with few people, this gorgeous beach a few miles down the road has colorful food stands with no names, just numbers, near the beach, so you can buy plenty of grilled fish and ice cream.
Don't: Let the constant catcalling bother you.
It's amazing what people will say about you when they don't know you speak fluent Spanish.
Don't: Be Afraid to Yell at the Shoeshining Boys
Everywhere, but especially in Santo Domingo. How many times do you have to explain to them that they can't exactly shine your five dollar flip flops? Whatever you do, don't give in--you'll never get rid of them then.
if you want pictures or more information please go to lonelyplanet.com and type in dominican republic...good luck and I hope you enjoy your trip
