Really there is no definition about Post-Modernism. You can wikipedia all you like, but you won't get a direct answer. Modernism ended MAYBE around 1945... although some may argue it. And many people just assume postmodernism began immediately afterwards. However, how do you explain the postmodernsim saturated in Tristam Shandy (written in the 18th century). I'd recommend buying Terry Eagleton's Introduction to theory book because wikipedia really won't do it justice.

you can find plenty of information for postmodernism on wikipedia. here is a short excerpt (please see source's for full article):

The term Postmodernism (abbreviated Pomo) was coined in 1949 to describe a dissatisfaction with modern architecture, founding the postmodern architecture. and later of, relating to, or being any of several movements (as in art, architecture, or literature) that are reactions against the philosophy and practices of modern movements. Postmodernism is often understood as an effect of, or reaction to, postmodernity – a historical and cultural period that many believe has succeeded modernity.

When the idea of a reaction, or even rejection, of the movement of modernism (a late 19th, early 20th centuries art movement) was borrowed by other fields, it became synonymous in some contexts with postmodernity, a term for the evolutions in society, economy and culture since the 1960s. The term is closely linked with poststructuralism (cf. Jacques Derrida) and with modernism in terms of a rejection of its bourgeois, elitist culture.

Post modernism is usually thought of a "mash-up" of traditional ideologies and motifs. In architecture, it could be combining a traditional inspiried roman facade with a chicago school tower using exaggerated color schemes. I think you could trace the beginning of post-modernism in spirit to man of the revivalist art and architecture of the 19th century - but in practice, most people associate it with 1950's post war art & architecture - with it's "golden age" probably being the 1980's and 1990's.
