I found a site with a chem. slide show lecture. See if it helps at all.

A precipitation reaction is a common type of chemical reaction in solution chemistry. Basically, two or more solutions are combined resulting in a reaction that produces an insoluble product, a precipitate. Typically, these types of reactions involve ionic compounds in aqueous solution. The precipitation reaction is said to occur because of the strong attractive forces certain ions have for each other. These ions combine and fall out of solution in the formation of a solid.

Dissolution reaction for sodium chloride

NaCl (s) = Na+ (aq) + Cl- (aq)

addition of any ionic sodium salt (such as sodium nitrate) will displace the above reaction to the left. So, some NaCl will be displaced away from solution.
