i really like it when bands use unconventional instruments and sounds. i think rock songs with harpsichord, organs, flute and the like are pretty cool.

can anyone recommend any songs to me with some unconventional instrumentation?

i also really like cool percussion, for example the drums in This Place is a Prison by the Postal Service. any similar music would be appreciated. thanks.

My dad listens to rock and roll, funk, and jazz. His favorite artists are Elton John, Prince, David Bowie, and Grover Washington. For some reason he hates the early Beatles, I don't know why maybe a traumatic childhood moment. Then he likes Queen and Led Zeppelin too. So, he listens to cool music...but I have to repeatedly ask him to turn it down. My mom used to listen to cool music. Recently it seems as though she's going through a music phase listening to Amy Winehouse, Christina Aguilera, and a whole bunch of other people I never heard of...I'm not saying it's bad, it's just unlike her. I just have to help her get back.

Santana has interesting percussion.
Dave Matthews has violin as a lead instrument.
Miles Davis had bassists who soloed on their bass like a guitar, Foley in particular.
John Popper of Blues Traveler plays his blues harp like a saxophone at times.

Korrpiklanni is amazing, they use just as much old school instrument stuff as they do new school, its folk metal. you will probably dig apocolyptica, its metal on cellos and its absolutly amazing what they can do. it sounds weird but check them out. sonata artica has some stuff like what you are discribing. hope i helped
