Hello:
If you don't install an antivirus, I suggest Windows Live OneCare. If you run Windows, you need an antivirus. It's just that simple. If you don't use one, and if you surf the net, it will only be a matter of time before something attacks your PC. Vista is somewhat less prone to problems from certain attack methods, but only somewhat.
It only takes one good hit for you to realize just how bad some of the attacks can be. I'm not a virus expert, but I have fought a considerable amount of malware, some of it during deliberate tests of vulnerability and consequences and, if a perfectly working PC gets hit, it can make you wish you didn't own a computer.
Hope that helps.
Cheers!

If you have a computer without power protection, and you connect it to the Internet without good anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-hacker, anti-spyware etc., then before long you won't have a computer any more, you will have a mess. You might also be without any money, job, home, or opportunity to improve your situation, because someone has stolen your identity and cleaned out your credit.
Now different people have different opinions as to what is good protection. Many of them are now parents, dead in automobile accidents, or struggling with a messed up computer.
If you think some protection is adequate, why are you asking the question? Some people might agree with you. I happen to be one who disagrees with you. My basis of opinion is that Microsoft is relatively new to the concept of taking computer security seriously. The company has been caught several times in the past telling the customer what the market wants (we have good security) but not actually delivering. Some day they will deliver on that promise. Also the malware distributors seem to go after the bigger the target, the more troublemakers attracted.
Now if you are going to get protection, you should get Norton OR Trend Micro OR one of their many competitors. In the area of Internet Security, with the exception of non-Microsoft Operating Systems and Anti-Spyware and layered defenses, having two different anti-malware products running on the same computer is asking for trouble ... they will mess each other up.
I have layered defenses on my PC.
There is a hardware firewall, and a software firewall.
My ISP intercepts a lot of trouble, my Norton also intercepts some, and I kind of recognize what might be trouble and do not open it. I do not use software that automatically opens things for me.

Yes, programs like Norton and Trend Micro are necessary and vital for any computer that goes on to the Internet. Now, I am not saying to have both, have one like Norton and it protects you from viruses, hackers, spam, malware, spyware, and that sort of thing.

yea exspcally if you plan on having your computer on the internet a unprotected pc will usually get infected with at least 1 viris within 10 min of being on the internet . I wouldnt recoment norton I think its crap and full of bloat that slows down your pc. Trend is ok but it cost $$$ id recomend avg its free and it down the job without slowing down your pc much. also you need a spyware scanner id recoment spybot search and destroy sypware/adware is dinnerent then viri and a viris scanner wont nessarly get rid of the adware.
also you need a firewall windows has one built in now and its ok but id recoment something like zonealarm or my favert is kero.
Id never trust micorsoft to secure my computer for me. tahts like handing your 4 year old the keys to your car asking him to go get it washed then getting upset when your car is totaled

Don't get Norton or Mcafee, it'll slow your computer down.
I advise Bit defender Anti virus Plus. It had the best rating on Consumer Reports.
I have Bit defender and it's very fast, and does not slow my computer like Norton did.
