If it's a brand new laptop id charge it for 24 hours.
To extend batterylife after every 2nd or third charge let the battery go completely dead before recharging.

It totally depends on the model, some charge much faster than others. It will charge much faster if you have the notebook off rather than on.

generally mine would take about 4 hours to charge fully
