Most of us only own the top surface of the property. I do not own the mineral rights to the property I pay taxes on.

Most land in North America was claimed under legal authority of the British, than American and Canadian Governments thru treaty and military occupations from the North American Natives. Except for some legal questions arising from the retaking of land previously given as reservation land the rest is legally owned. This ownership would stand up in any national or World Court. That is not to say there may be some claims to land under current or future treaty or court decision.

Technically yes because the property was purchased from the Native Americans who laid claim to it before (yes the purchases were pretty paultry, but it's good enough for our chain of title rules). The government granted the property to people or sold it, and the title continues.
Now, if you want to argue about whether anyone can ever truly "own land," that's a philosophical discussion I'd rather not have. :)

Yes we do. The US owned the land and then States had it and sold it to various people from which we buy it for our houses. That is why we have a deed to the land.It proves we own it or buying it.
