Consider how many square inches fit in one square foot. If you have 1-inch by 1-inch tiles, you can fit 12 of them across in one foot. You need 12 rows of these to make it one foot high. Thus, there are 144 square inches in one square foot, or:

1 ft^2 = 144 in^2
or
(1 ft^2) / (144 in^2) = 1

This gives you the conversion factor for going between the two units. To convert, you simply multiply by 1. Multiplying by 1 means you aren't changing the number.

1008 in^2 * (1 ft^2) / (144 in^2) = 7 ft^2
