i will be going to college in a year and will need a laptop. i was wondering what laptops i should look into that are good not only for school use, but for down time and playing games. im really into the battle for middle earth game and other sports games right now and i know they take up some memory so is it even feasible that i could play these games or should i just forget playing any of these games on my laptop?

Laptops were really meant more for mobility rather than gaming. Laptops w/ good 3D graphics are expensive and yet their gaming power pale in comparison to gaming desktops. Here's a suggestion on the specs:
1. Core Solo or CeleronM 450 (Yonah core). Cheap but fast for casual computing. Dual cores are nice if you always run multithreaded apps. Otherwise the second core is just idle most of the time.
2. At least 1Gb RAM.
3. Graphics w/ onboard memory (at least Geforce Go 6250 or higher). For better gaming, spend more on this specs.

BUT do take note that the laptop has poor ergonomics and was not really meant for long hours of use. It can cause neck and wrist pain. One solution is to raise the screen to eye level by placing the laptop on top of a telephone directory or books. Then attach a keyboard, preferably on a tray so that arms are always horizontal. Use a large mouse preferably at tray level also. This would insure that you do not get Carpal Tunnel syndrome before you graduate from College.

Laptops are fantastic for college because not only can you work on them in your dorm or at home but also bring them to class or the library. My suggestion on what kind to get is to go to your nearest computer department store. The reason why I say this is because computer department stores if you have a problem with computer they will send it out at no cost to you to have it fixed, if it is on warranty. Be sure to get the warranty.
ANother reason why I dont buy from Dell or other companies like them is that a lot of times if something is wrong with the computer and you need to get a hold of someone to help out, a lot of times it is a very long distance phone call
