Okay 1st of all 12 inches equals a foot long on a ruler but for that every inch on a ruler equals a foot bigger on your foot.
For instance if your foot it 10 inches then your foot is size 10.
Okay!

Because 12 inches is what is called a foot. The ruler is a foot long so it is 12 inches. It doesn't matter if it is bigger than your acctual foot!

It is because your foot is not 12 inches long. 12 inches is a measured foot. If you were needing a 6 in. board and measured it with your foot the board would be too short. By controlling the length in inches for a foot then there will not be any mistakes in measuring something. Does this make any sense?

A "foot" long ruler isnt meant to be literal. 12 inches just equal 1 foot!
(It would be a little scary if your foot was that big, anyway)...

Our standard measuring system is based on the old English system which they no longer use. They approximated the average length of a man's foot ect.
The USA is the lone hold out, every one else is on the metric system.
We might of been metric in the the first few years of nationhood had it been for fate
The person in charge of implementing the metric system in America died unexpectedly with no one else in on the project, it to died.
The last resurgence was in the 70's without a push it to petered out so today we have machinery and other things having mixed measuring systems. For example NASA had two expensive project failures when they confused the to measuring system, in the latest one a Mars lander crashed on Mars due to it's software being metric and it's commends being in the English system.
The lesson here is that things should be kept as simple as passable so we all can understand it to avoid really expensive lessons.

Because when the set up the units of measure the used the king and his foot was the standard, and the length of his shoulder to the tip of his finger was a yard, and the span of his hand was the way they measured the size of a horse.

I believe that the "foot" as in measureing inches, yards yada yada comes from the length of a kings foot over in England or somewhere.
