Consider the reaction
i2O2(g)+5CO2(g)--->5CO2(g)+i2(g)
a) 80 grams of i2O5 reacts with 28 grams of carbon monocxide, CO.
Determine the mass of iodine i2, which could be produced?
b) If, in the above situation, only .160 moles of iodine, i2 was prodiced...
-What mass of iodine was produced?
-What percentage yield of iodine was produced?

Thank you for all your help! Please try to explain!

The reaction has some typos; I assume its:

I2O5 + 5CO > 5CO2 + I2

Part a] First, determine number of moles of each reactant:

80g/[(2 x 127) + (5 x 16)] = 80g/334g/mol = 0.24mole I2O5
28g/(12 + 16)g/mol = 28g/28g/mol = 1 mole CO

Determine the limiting reagent (one that will run out first), (if any).

Note that from the equation you need 5 CO's to convert 1 I2O5 into I2.

To convert all the I2O5 into I2 you would need
0.24 x 5 moles CO or 1.2 moles CO
But you only have 1 mole, so CO is the limiting reagent

You can convert only 1mol/5 or 0.20mole of the I2O5 into I2
The iodine (I2) produced weighs 0.20mol x 2 x 127g/mol = 50.8g
(remember iodine is I2 so a mole of I2 will weigh 2 x 127g)

For part b] first convert moles I2 to grams.

0.160mol x 2 x 127= 40.64

for %yield, divide actual amount of material obtained by amount that was theoretically possible

(40.64/50.8) x 100% = 80%

Ick. Lol.

For a you have to determine the limiting reactant.
Convert both to moles and see which makes less when you do a mole to mole ratio with each reactant compared to I2.

For b you have to convert the answer from a back to grams and then use the equation to figure out the percentage yield.

I'd do it for you, but that's not how you learn. Although I do admit, I taught this concept to myself so it's not hard. Especially since the first time I did it was on a test and I did it right. Read your text/notes, you'll be fine.

0, aspects do ot have quotes -2, oxygen is often -2 in a compound +3, SO4 consistently has a cost of -2, compounds have not got a cost +6, SO4 is -2, oxygen is often -2, if the O is -8,the S must be +6

lol. i got an answer...but i just wanted to make sure it was right. i got 60.9g of I2. this stuff is soo hard... its too confusing.
