The Great Gatsby is much more modern in writing style and word choice. Fitzgerald is often credited with ushering in a new kind of novel writing, a kind that is much closer to today's novels than Hawthorne's writing. The Scarlet Letter is a great story as well, but the writing is clearly 19th century gothicism. I'd read both of them, but use what I've written to make your decision.

If you're a good reader, the Scarlet Letter. Depends on what you define as boring stuff. Hawthorne uses a ton of romantic description (romantic the style, not as in lovey-dovey). His sentences are very long and poetic. Think slightly less difficult than Shakespeare to read.
I personally didn't like the Great Gatsby - I thought it was boring and kind of pointless, but that's just my preference.
I loved the Scarlet Letter, but you really need to pay attention when you read, and like reading slightly more difficult books. But I thought it had a beautiful story and message.
If you're into the older stuff, the more classic stuff, then go with Letter. If you're more into modern stuff and style, go with Gatsby.

I loved Scarlet Letter when I read it in HS, but I was in a very small minority in my class. Great Gatsby is probably easier to read for most people today. The situation is more contemporary, and it doesn't have the long and odd intro that frustrates a lot of students reading Scarlet Letter.

The Great Gatsby is much easier to read and understand than the Scarlet Letter. I liked both books but the Scarlet Letter was really complex and confusing. Not to mention, his sentences are extremely long and he hardly uses any periods. You're better of with GG.

Both are excellent books. I prefer Scarlet Letter, but perhaps Great Gatsby might be an easier read for you. Pax - C
PS = There are no such thing as boring books- only boring people. You can always get something out of a book - any book - you read.

I thought that Gatsby wasn't bad, but some others thought it was boring. However, I heard really bad reports on The Scarlet Letter (I never read it). Gatsby's not long at least, and it kept my attention the whole time.

Both are great books but both could also be considered to have "boring stuff" by a lot of today's standards. I'd say go with the Great Gatsby, it's more modern.

The Scarlet Letter by N.H. It's a lot easier to care about the characters and so makes you want to know about them and their story more thn Gatsby. It's impossible to care about any of the people in Gatsby, and that makes it an irritating read, to my mind.
