Hi Gene,
Because this amount is close to 3 times the poverty line...when you marry a non-US citizen and intend to bring him here to live, you must prove to the government that you are self-sufficient for the past 3 years (at least $25,000 annual income) and that you will not be having to use welfare or other social services that cost money to taxpayers...this is common for both the fiancee visa and the spouse visa...If this man is already here, I think there is a different process (but I know nothing about that)...if they haven't already, the government will send you papers requesting your last 3 years tax returns to prove this (so have them ready!!)...Hope this helps!

To prove she is marrying him for love and not just so he can move here as an immigrant. She has to be able to support him so that he or they don't end up on welfare. As you've noticed, people are becoming very hostile over the whole immigration thing. By the way, if a person isn't making $25K a year, there is a problem already. That is an income of just $12 per hour. If someone can't make that much, then they can't support someone else on top of themselves.

I think that's just above the poverty level. Someone- the American sponsor- has to show she can support her spouse
