You can actually use sugar water safely.
Use at least one-third sugar or more to first attract the hummers. I purchase red humming bird feeders because they love the red. I have also purchased a product called "First Nature" that is excellent. It is made in Rogers, Arkansas, but works wonders. This is their email address: www.firstnature.com. I buy this at Wal-Mart. It really attracts the hummers. Just keep your feeder clean to protect the little bitty things.

Start with a very clean feeder. The solution you use is a 4:1 ratio of water to sugar. I make it in small amounts because it spoils(smells like vinegar) after a few days or gets diluted by rain. So.I use 1 cup of water to 1 quarter cup of sugar. The water must be boiled and cooled first. You shouldn't add dyes to it. Hummers love red and I've seen some feeders in green. Enjoy!!!

I meant, 1 part sugar to 4 parts water (hot or boiling).

The hot water helps dissolve the sugar and helps retard bacterial growth- make sure you change it out a couple times a week-more if the weather is hot.

You DON'T need food coloring- it's unnecessary. If you put in in a hummingbird feeder, they'll find it. Avoid feeders that have the color yellow in it-that attracts wasps.

Two cups of sugar to one cup water. Bring the mixture to a boil and let cool before adding to the feeder. It is best not to add food coloring to the mixture and have some form of red or bright colors to the feeder itself. The food coloring can be harmful to the birds. Also pick out a feeder with no or a removable perch as some perch's (the hoop or round type) can be harmful to the birds as they can get stuck in them. This solution can be left out for one week and then needs to be changed because it becomes rancid.

I got a box of INSTANT NECTAR BY Perky Pet at Walmart, It has 6 packages of the nectar in the box for about 5.00. Each package of nectar makes 1 quart. I have very good luck with it . I have several hummers at my feeders daily. It is easy to use just add tap water and pour into feeders. You might try it or boil 3 parts water to 1 part sugar no food coloring is needed in red feeders.cool and put into clean feeders.

Sugar and water. NO coloring! ~
And NEVER sugar substitute. It'll kill them.
Clean the feeder with boiling water between sugar fills to kill all the bacteria. I even used bleach, - rinse very well.

The best thing to do is buy the solution from a garden center or something like that. Homemade solutions cause the eggs the lay to be soft, which in turn would effect the next generation.

I have not had much luck with hummingbird feeders, they pass them right by and head for the petunias. I would suggest you put a pot of petunia or other tube shaped flowers out, and you will see them around that. Good luck.

Sugar and water, with some red food coloring drops in it, I think they can hone in on bright red the best.
