Do an Internet search for helpful tips (I found the one below by typing in "trying to conceive" in Yahoo's search engine). There are also books to buy that are usually inexpensive. Your wife might even have some friends with books they'd like to get off their shelves (so have her ask).
As for holding the semen inside, she should lay still with her pelvis elevated on a pillow after intercourse. She can even lift up her legs. This should be done for 20-30 minutes. Having intercourse right before bed (with a pillow ready for you to prop under her during or afterwords) makes it easier for her to not have to get bored laying around for half an hour. If you're older, try having sex every other day rather than every day to build up your sperm levels. She should also be tracking her ovulation. You can even buy kits to do this. Good luck!

People get pregnant from the pull out method all the time. It is not a very good form of birth control. And both times that I have gotten pregnant, I have not held the sperm inside of me. I will usually lay down for a minute or so afterwards, and then I get up. But all the stuff that falls out is either dead sperm, and most of it is the seminal fluid that the spermies swim in until they get inside the vagina, where they swim in the womans mucous

Learned on a show on Discovery channel that orgasms in women increase the chances of pregnancy.
If you are under 35, 1 year of trying and then see doctor unless you have reason to believe that there is a problem already. If you are over 35, 6 months.

It really helps if the woman climaxes during or shortly after ejaculation. (It helps suction the sperm up and in) And especially if she lays on her back for 15 minutes afterwards. Better yet, tuck a pillow under her bum so she's elevated slightly.
Yes, abstaining from sex a few days before ovulation day works because there would be a higher consentration of sperm in the semen.

Hey,
You shouldn't go see a doctor until you have been trying for over a year or two...
You need to make sure you have sex 2 days before ovulation then on ovulation then 2 days after.
Don't have sex or ejaculate other than on those days...
After you have sex she should lay on her back and push her pelvis up a little in the air for about 45mins...
She can rest it on a few pillows if that is more comfortable!
Good Luck

When you're done having sex, have her put a pillow under her butt and have her legs up against the backboard of the bed or a wall or something for 10-20 minutes. That's what was recommended to me and it worked.

I've heard that the woman should stand on her head as much as possible after sex to help the sperm get where they need to go. have sex as often as you want. you gotta have sex to make the baby, after all. but don't stress about it. that doesn't help at all. just relax and it will happen. if it doesn't after a year of trying, then see a doctor.
