i drive a 95 galant currently at 195,000 miles lately its really hard to steer sometimes and it leaks power steering fluid. my mechanic told me the rack and pinion needs replacing but it'll cost me $580 for the part is that true or could it be something else?

the mechanic is more than likely right but the price seems high.

It could be leaking from hoses/lines, the resevoir, fittings, and also past the inner rack seals out the bellows boots. If it is the rack, then you are looking around $300 for the part alone plus all the labor. Unfortunately, $580 does sound about right. Call around to different shops and ask them how much they would charge to put on the rack if you already have the part (assuming you bought it from AutoZone).

Your power steering pump is about shot, or is low on fluid if it has a leak it most likely low you can add some, and continue to add or go to a junkyard and pick on up and replace it

Its the power steering device that doesnt work...if what your saying is true and u say it leaks...their it is...thats he problem...if not take it to somenbody else...get a second opinion!km

it sounds like the rack and pinion is bad, but you can find one a lot cheaper than that, I bought one for my car from an auto salvage yard, I paid 60 bucks for it.
