after much thought and deliberating, i think that is how Tony died, a gunshot to the head, which ,as the scene kept showing everything from tony's eyes, it ended in his eyes. It seemed a copout at first, but i dont know. I think it lets the viewer decide what happens next. Unless it was some unforseen cirumstance, probably related to huge monetary amounts - for another season, or a movie of sorts, who knows. Only time will tell.

Tony was a guy that "you love to hate, and hate to love"..he's an anti-hero. David Chase is one brilliant storyteller. I watched every minute of last nights episode, and I thought it was good. I was thinking at the end that Tony's life would go on as usual, maybe focusing more spending better time with his family and less time at work. But I was curiously empty about the ending. I picked up on the same things that you did, but I had not drawn that conclusion that you explained. There was one detail that you pointed out, about the silence at the end. That makes good sense to me, that when your dead, nothing else of you lives on, YOU'RE DEAD! That's it! You make really good sense. I was (and still am) going to watch it again tonight to make sure I did not miss any other clues. But I have to say, what would be more fitting as a conclusion to a great story that we faithfully followed every week? No matter how David Chase wanted us to visualize the last episode, it was anything but predictable. This was a great show. Everyone from the cast and crew were super! It will be missed. NOTE: I read somewhere on the web, that if they do make a Sopranos movie that is suppose to take place before the series started. If that were to happen that would be really awesome. OK, I watched the finale again, and I don't want to discredit your inturpritation on the ending. But even though there were similarities to the subjects that you pointed out, I saw no tell tale signs of any thing concrete. After I left this question, I was thinking that what if those people were "figments of his past"..."old haunts"..."ghost of his past transgretions"? However, I could pass it off the way you understood the ending, but If you don't look for any clues and only listen to the song...it will give you the ending. I will say this for you, you have a great imagination, and I think had David Chase considered what you thought it would have work well.

I agree with you and here's why--after listening to commentators and thinking about it.

David Chase said it's all there, but he didn't say that it was all there in the last show.

David Chase said a long time ago, that he knew the ending when he began writing the series.

In the first show, Bobby asks Tony what it feels like to get whacked. Tony answers that you'd never know what hit you.

People complain that there was no resolution of issues, but everybody in the family had worked through their problems and would now be able to live independent lives. A.J. would do what Chris had been doing. Meadow would marry and be a lawyer. Carmela would continue with her spec houses. In the last scene, the family is at peace finally and talk about remembering the good times.

The FBI guy helped Tony get rid of Phil, but he also wanted to get rid of Tony.

The words of the final song "Don't stop believing." are very evocative, for the audience as well as the remaining family members.

Fading to black was just what you say. Tony never knew what hit him. They could have followed it with a small light in the center growing bigger to fill the screen, to make it more obvious, but that would have been a cliche' and not in the nature of the writer.

Been thinking about this. Thanks for letting me get my theory out. Pass it on.

Carmine or however you spell his name, was quietly taking over, remember he had Johnny Sack thrown in jail and I believe had Tony killed as well.
