I would wait a little longer, maybe closer to 20 weeks. The less time you have to spend around a boss who may treat you with animosity for taking maternity leave the better. Do you have to speak to him directly, or to the HR dept?

Get a doctors note confirming you pregnancy and give him a copy. Let him know you will have appointments throughout the pregnancy and the expectant due date. Beside you will eventually start to show and he will know anyway.

It doesn't matter if he is a nice boss or not. As long as you can still do your job (its not physically demanding) then there is not much he can do. You have rights as a pregnant woman. Just sit him down tell him your pregnant and see what he says.

Just go to him privately, and say "I wanted to let you know that I am pregnant. My due date is in January, but I wanted to give you plenty of notice so that we can plan for an easy transition during my maternity leave..."
If you handle it professionally, he will probably take your lead. Congrats and best of luck!

Don't matter if he's a nice guy, you got rights, baby! definitely get the doctors note, and explain to him that you will still be a viable member of the company and he has nothing to worry about.
Tell him you'll name the kid after him if it's a boy...
