I think the way it is most likely to occur is by the discovery of a radio transmission from deep space. So we mostly need to concern ourselves with how information is going to be handled. What details should the general public be allowed to know? Is it possible that we might receive technological information which would severely throw off the balance of world power? One must consider the impact of these things. As yet, I don't know if the US or the UN actually have a policy regarding the dissemination of such information.
Then we have to think about what kind of messages we are going to send. After first contact, should we be careful not to give *them* potentially dangerous technology? What should we tell them about ourselves? Who is responsible for evaluating such things? Sorry, it seems as if I have asked more questions than I have answered. But I believe these are the kinds of issues which would come up. All related to exchange of information. Our contact will almost certainly be remote.

never happen? hahahahah. funniest thing ive ever heard. the universe is 14 billion years old, with countless stars and galaxies, to think we are the only civilization in the universe is simply arrogant and ignorant. i do not see whats to fear, the only thing we are doing by not trying to find or research other civilizations is restricting our knowledge of whats out there. It blows my mind that we spend trillions of dollars on wars and destroying this planet, when it is all we have. i think space exploration should be our main concern, as for what we will do when it happens, im not too sure. most likely carry on and become friends with them. all we could do is benefit from such a situation.

When it happens (notice "when") governments will not be able to suppress that information. It will be the greatest discovery in the history of mankind and will have consequences that we can't even imagine nor predict whether they will be negative or positive at this time. To discover another civilization we do not actually have to travel there.

The christians will immediately set up some missionaries to go there and teach about the lord jesus christ.

It will take how many thousands of years to get there? It's ok, god will provide.

Seriously... that's what would happen

Even they can find one, it is almost impossible to colonize it based on the current space tech. The spacecrafts' speed is too slow, because lack of space for energy. I think for human being, the most important tech right now is fusion. Once that is controlled and applied, we can really go into the space to explore. Otherwise we can never go outside the solar sys.
