Section 1. After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited.

Section 2. The Congress and the several States shall have concurrent power to enforce this rticle by appropriate legislation.

Section 3. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of the seveal States, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the States by the Congress.

The Eighteenth Amendment was ratified January 16, 1919. It was repealed by the Twenty-First Amendment, December 5, 1933.

It was the Prohibition Amendment, which outlawed the sale and manufacture of alcohol, which did little to stop the flow of booze in this country (only putting it in the hands of the criminal element). Repealed with the 21st amendment. -RKO- 06/12/07

The cause of the great misery and dry hole called the prohibition era. It created speakeasies and bathtub gin.

It brought about the birth of the modern mixed drink and modern jazz clubs.

They were good times, they were bad times, they were all that jazz times.

It brought us the Roaring 20's and Harlem nights.

In short, America officially went dry and unofficially went underground and lived an alcohol fueled lascivious lifestyle in night clubs and back bars theretofore never heard of until after passage of Amendment 18.

And ... it brought us the TV series and movie, "The Untouchables".
