I didn't need Colin Powell to tell me that - common decency says you don't kidnap prisoners in an undeclared war and spirit them away to an offshore military base for abuse and toruture. When will people get this? Even if the Geneva Conventions allowed for that sort of behavior (which they don't), one would have to be short on ordinary human sense to conceive of such an idea.

Guantanamo should be maintained as long as there are people taking violent actions against us, and refuse to wear uniforms and obey the principles of the Geneva Conventions.
They don't deserve protections under the Geneva Conventions because of their actions in violation of those same conventions.
If Colin Powell can't recognize that, it is a good thing he is GONE!

Powell is an excellent military man, and in my opinion shoots square and straight.
Gitmo's an embarassment. The things that go on there are an embarassment.
You wanna have a military base there? Fine. Just stop holding foreigners there. There's plenty of prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan to hold suspected terrorists, or just try them in the civil courts of the US and get it over with.
Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done. Stop the secret trials! That's just to embarassing and makes us look bad to the rest of the world.

Until 9/11, terrorists were criminals who needed to be tracked down and brought to justice. After 9/11, Bush declared terrorists to be military combatants, which is what terrorists want! It adds legitimacy to their struggle, their actions.
In reality, a huge military trying to find a few hundred civilian criminals in foreign countries makes us look ridiculous. Every day, terrorists kill our soldiers, but our soldiers kill no terrorists.
Our greatest success against terrorism is when they try to fight us "here" instead of "there"! "Here", the FBI, CIA and law enforcement can find them. "There", we don't have a clue who the bad guys are. Locking people up in secret prisons and never bringing them to trial means innocent people can be grabbed off the street and held forever. It's not about the rights of criminal terrorists. It's about the rights of you and me.

It needs to be closed. Too much controversy over it. I heard too much of torture and other mistreatment. Alot of the people being held there are not even really being held on proper evidence to support why they are there. Alot of them are just put there and held for many years without trial, without certain rights. There needs to be proper evidence or proper witnesses of their criminal acts to be able to hold them there.

I have long believed that it is cowardly to maintain a facility such as Gitmo on foreign soil. It allows for activities that would be considered illegal on US soil. I'm all for its closing. And as the US clearly continues to villify Castro's Cuba...its best to leave. Good for Powell.

I agree with him. Gitmo and it's detainees are a fundamental violation of human rights, and the constitution of the US.
Try these people in real courts - not the kangaroo courts of the military.
