As of today they're 9.5 out of the East, and 5.5 out of the WIld Card, not to mention they're on a 6 game winning streak, and won 9 out of 11.

Yes( with an asterik). First I must confess to being a life-long Yankees fan, so I admit I am a bit biased. The asterik is that my answer is predicated on their pitching staff staying healthy for the duration of the season. The Yankees pitching staff has done well lately and the bullpen, despite Mariano's inconsistencies is still strong. The starting line up has been productive and the team got an emotional boost from the return of Roger Clemens.

Remember the Yankees still have a lot of games coming up against weaker teams like Baltimore and Tampa Bay.

If the Yanks can close the gap with Boston to 6 games by the end of August, don't be surprised if the Yanks make a run at the Division title. The BoSox have a habit of folding when the Yanks are nipping at their heals.( witness last year's five game sweep at Fenway)

They only need to make up 6 games to take the wild card, there are 100 games left in the season. They can definitely make the playoffs, I don't know if they will but its still well within the realm of possibility. They've won the division before when they were 9.5 games back in August, so to say that they're done already is just ignorant.

I'm not a Yankees fan, but I gotta laugh at the guy that siad "Clemens aint going to do sh!t". He's had one start, its kind of hard to judge a season by 6 innings, and they were a pretty good 6 innings at that.

The Yankees definitely have a shot to make the playoffs. There's 101 games left in the regular season, and they've been playing very well. They are now believing they can win games where as before it seemed like they didn't believe they could win games. A-Rod is playing extremely well this year, and let's not forget about Derek Jeter and the great play of Posada, who definitely deserves to be in the All-Star Game but probably won't make it. This is a team who came back last year and won the AL East convincingly and they can do it again. The Yanks finally look like they're coming out of their injury problems and have gotten together a solid pitching staff. Also, the Red Sox are sometime going to hit injury problems and struggle. Anything can happen in baseball.

Unlikely.

The Yankees went on their latest run against some soft teams, with the exception of winning 2 out 3 from Boston. They need to show that they can win every series against good teams on a consistent basis.

They Yankee's bullpen is still soft at best, Torre has already been forced to overuse the bullpen. Rivera isn't the shut down closer that he used to be.

Moose is showing his age.

Rocket is only going to give the Yankees 5 innings at best, assuming he leaves the game with the lead - can the bullpen hold it? Rocket hasn't pitched against a good lineup yet, it's unknown how good he is going to be against a Boston or LAA like lineup.

Pettite and Wang are going to have to be lights out and pitching well into each game to save the bullpen for the days that Moose and Rocket pitch.

Pitching wins championships, as shown by the 1990 Yankees. Yankees just don't have championship level pitching this season.

The Yankees are still sub 500. The Red Sox are 18 games over 500, and still have 18 games with Tampa Bay to play. The Yankees best bet is the wild card, which means they will likely need either Cleveland or Detroit to self destruct to make the wild card. Possible, yes. Probable...?

With all the "crap" going on around the team right now, soap opera known as A-Rod, first base, pressure on Cashman and Torre from GS, the fans, the media ..... I question probable.

This isn't the 1978 Yankee team. You don't have a Ron Guidry pitching with a sub 2.00 ERA.

i am not a yankees fan, but right now they are looking really good. They have a good chance of winning their division with 100 games left and a few more divsional games esp. with the red sox and they have a better chance of taking the wild card since they are only 5.5 games out. Their bats have taken off now and the pitching has come around. As long as everyone is healthy and in a good atmosphere, these yanks will be challengers till the end.

They're out. Although their bats are finally alive their pitching has been unable to stay healthy. Boston is a good team from top to bottom and will not give up their lead in the east and either Detroit or Cleveland will take the wild card.

Their best bet is to aquire young pitching and stop signing pitchers who are well out of their prime to multi-million dollar contracts.

Ooooh...they won six straight beating a mediocre Chicago White Sox squad and an annually awful Pittsburgh Pirates team. Anybody can look like "Murderer's Row" against those guys. I'll be convinced that the Yankees are back when they can beat teams that are over .500.

I am a Red Sox fan, so I am kind of enjoying their moment at the top...because I wouldn't be surprised if they have a mid to late season meltdown...but anyway, I think the Yankees can possibly still get the wildcard...They do have the most talented roster in baseball...Bringing Clemens back was not such a great idea...I mean, as I said I love the Red Sox, and he was awesome in his prime for us too...but he should probably let it go...He's not as dominant and certainly not worth what the Yankees are giving him...

There are 101 games left for them to play as of this morning. Not only can they make the playoffs, they can still win their division. Anyone who knows anything about baseball knows that the Yankees are consistently a menace to everyone else. There's a lot of baseball left to play, and if the Yankees shore up their pitching, we'll be talking about them in October and still watching them play.

As much as it pains me to say, they probably will make the playoffs. They have been doing the lie in the weeds routine a few years now, and they always come through. God help them in the playoffs, but they are a well put together bunch, and they have lots of guns at their disposal.
