i just baught a yellow male guppy fish (very small) and all he does is float at the top of the tank. i know you thinking "its dead". its not. it just floats there WHILE breathing. after a little while he will swim around for a minute but then floats again. i also have a turqoise male guppy and a red fish in the tank with him. i need to know if this is normal and what he is doing.

thankss.

It's not too unusual for a new fish to act very strangely for the first day or so. He is adjusting to the water differences, the new surroundings and the new tank mates. Watch carefully that the other males aren't picking on him badly, that can be a cause of what you are seeing. You note that he does swim around a bit so that's a good sign that it's not a serious problem.

Unfortunately, the outlook is pretty grim for your new little guy. Something isn't working properly with his swim bladder (the organ in a fish responsible for buoyancy - the ability to sink or float in the water). He might live for a while, but I've never had a fish last very long once they couldn't maintain position elsewhere in the water.

Sorry to hear that he died, but you need to check your tank water to make sure that it's ok for your surviving fish. Ammonia should be 0ppm, nitrite should be 0ppm, and nitrate should be less than 40ppm. If any of those is elevated, do a partial water change immediately, check the levels every few days and do water changes until the levels are back to normal.

I don't know why, but I didn't have any luck with my guppies in my tank, every guppie I bought died after a day max.
He has unfortunately the same signs mine always had before they died.
But I had bought a female that was pregnant, she died but she had babie before she died :-)
Only baby guppies born in my tank survive, funny but o well
