I have a Shibunkin (i think that's it) goldfish, and it has many assorted colors. Such as black, orange and it's tail is white. I've only had it for a few days so i am not used to how they look exactly, but recently saw a VERY small white spot on it's body that i have never seen before.
How can I tell if this spot on his body is ick?
How much longer do i have to give him medicine (if it is ick)?

You may have caught it early... however ick looks like grains of salt on your fish and can spread throught your entire tank. Make sure that your tank is at the right temperature for your fish as the temperature of the water is usually what causes ick. Treat your tank with the meds as directed on the package. If you purchased your meds from a regular pet store they may not work and it may be in your best interest to get more meds from a store that specializes in only fish. If you do go to a "fish" store make sure to bring a sample of your water. They usually will check it for free for you to make sure that everything in your tank is ok (their test kits are much better than the ones you purchase for yourself unless purchased by a fish store). Good luck, ick can kill an entire fish tank. Ick is not uncommon when purchasing fish from a place like petco. When purchasing fish make sure that all the fish on the same wall are healthy before purchasing. The fish tanks do not have indevidual filters and the same water cycles through all the tanks rendering them all unsafe if one tank is infected. Most of the time the stores get sick fish and do not realize this until the problem further developes in the store. If your fish does die take it back to the store with the 14 day guarantee you recieved (or should have recieved) and tell them that you were given a sick fish. Good luck.

Ich (or ick) is a parasite in the tank that looks like salt grains sprinkled on the fish, little raised white bumps. The worse it gets, the more little white spots. If what you are seeing is ich you will know within a day because more and more will show up on the fish. I would suggest you go get a good ich medication right away just in case. Quick Cure is a reliable brand or any other brand that contains Malachite green and Formalin.

If this is ich you will want to start treatment as soon as you know for sure. They first step in a sucess for treatment should be a good water change while cleaning the gravel very well. That will help remove some of the ich before you even start the treatment.

If you need any other help with this feel free to drop me an email.

Ick usually is more that just a few spots. If the fish truly has Ick it will be semi covered in tiny with spots that look like lint. Just in case raise your temp to around 80 turn off your light and add ick med. as directed. If the fish looks like its itching itself against a rock and the white spots are getting worse you may have a parasite. Parasite med is also sold at the local pet supply.

Ick looks like someone put salt on your fish! and it would not just be one spot. Treat the tank just like the directions tell you to.
