Is there an example you are thinking of? Cause I can think of a few examples.
By being creative with our experiment design.
Use of technology (MRI's EEG's etc)
By looking the things we observe that we believe are related to what we cannot see.
A less scientific approach is by simply asking the subject.

How naive you are. Have you not read the many magazines or observed the many television stations that create the MRI with and without drugs and during different stages of emotion? You can see that as well as peoples reaction during emotion.
