just be careful as to what fish you put in with your Betta...even neon tetras can nibble the fins off of bettas. Contact your local pet store and they can give you the best advice. Good Luck!

Probably protective gear, haha. Sorry, fish humor. Betta's are very aggressive and don't get along with too many fish. I have a goldfish and a plecostimus (SP?) in with mine, but those are the only 2 that haven't died in there. Definitely don't put anything smaller than the Betta in the tank. As far as more equip., make sure there are 2-3 plants and an aerator somewhere in the tank.

a filter, a lighted hood and a heater and you are good to go.
in a 10 gallon don't put in a bottom feeder -- they all get too big. you can use some shrimp but they might make shrimp dinner -- ghost shrimp are only like 3 for a dollar or something and are entertaining before they molt and get eaten --
you can use gouramis or guppies or something. i have a betta that is in with honey gouramis (i think "sunset" honey gouramis are thick lipped gouramis in reality). he swims with them like he is one of them. its kind of weird. guppies are fine too despite all the warnings. use some plants to break up the line of vision so they can't see all the way across the tank and you should be fine. a school of rasboras or tetras or some platies would be ok too.

Do not put a goldfish with a betta together. You can put neon tetras in with him. put 5 to 7 of them. Or you can put an African Drawf Frog. The frog stays at the bottom so make sure the frog gets food. You can put a guppy, mollie or platy. Just make sure that if you don't want fry to get a male. You can also put a cory. Anyone of those is a good choice.
I would do this...
1 male betta
5 to 7 neon tetras
1 African Drawf frog
Get some plants for them to hide. Fake plants easier to handle then live plants. If you get a frog put some small plant pots for it to hide.

Betta's like any other fish can be aggressive or passive. I think you best choice would be a few cory cats. They stay on the bottom and should not poss any threat to the betta.

I would not put other fish in with a betta for three reasons. One, betta's make their own air, so you don't really need a air pump, sadly most "normal" fish can't make their own air. Two, betta's have their own food and the other fish might not eat the food. And three, other fish ten to nip at the betta's fins because their big. But if you really want other fish, I would recommend neon's and white clouds. Neon's and clouds don't get very big but do need air. Theirs these little stones that you can drop in the tank to make air bubbles if you don't have a air pump.
