V Twin refers to the configuration of the cylinders in a motorcycle (any) engine. The engine has 2 cylinders (twin) arranged at an angle facing each other (V). Directly opposed is called a boxer style. Many cruiser motorcycles have V-twin engines as well as a number of other styles. It is the style in most Harleys. The major difference is in the angle of the V.

Yes, V twins are reliable. All engines periodically need tune-ups, the responsibility is the owners'. Durability depends on the angle of the cylinders, if the engine is air or liquid cooled and if if runs balancers. H-D is a pretty old design, the very action of the pistons stresses the engine. Since it's air-cooled, tolerances are not close and variations in heat cause increase stress on the parts. Being made in USA has nothing to do with it. Victory is made in USA as were many Honda Shadows which have racked up hundreds of thousands of trouble-free miles.

Well, V-twin refers to the shape the cylinders in a two-cylinder make. Usually they are in a 90 degree or 45 degree shape. some are different though like a 60 degree V or a 72 degree. There may be a few others but they are rare. The Steeper the angle the more torque you'll see. But also the more even the oil distribution for both cylinders. so basically, the shape the cylinders make

The engine cylinders are generally on a 45 degree angle to each other and form a V when you look at them from the side. Twin means two cylinders.

Twin means two cylinders, designed in the shape of a "v". Most normal v is 45 degree angle, such as the Harley Davidson. Could have other angles, such as 90 degrees or anything the manufacturer designs to suit his purpose.

Engine configuration is a "V" shape, as opposed to a vertical twin (like the old Triumphs/BSA's) or in-line 4's (Honda 750's of old)

It means it's a gas powered engine that has two cylinders that aren't in an "in line" position (or side-mounted, the way BMW does). That's about it. It's named for the resemblance of the cylinder configuration to the letter "V."

the flywheel is turned by piston movement. Both pistons are angled towards the flywheel in a v shape. Hence the name "v-twin"
explaine the neg? ..and a bmw v-twin.., don't those pistons come in sideways?
