how can i upgrade my computer without reformatting my partitions.

I assume you mean "how do I upgrade my hard drive without reformatting...".

If you already have data on hard drives or partitions, you can upgrade to a new hard disk by installing the new drive and then copy the partitions to the new drive using "Drive Image" or Symantec "Ghost" - these programs will make a bit-for-bit copy of the old drives onto the new drive allowing you to upgrade without reformatting.
