Osmosis is the process by which plants absorb water from the soil. It begins at the leaf, where water is diffused out from transpiration thus lowering water concentration. Water is then pulled up the xylem to replace the lost water going all the way down to the roots system.

Microscopic root hairs extend from the root cells. These root hairs take water into the plant by osmosis. Therefore, every root cell has access to water, and the water travels upward via the plant's root system to the stem(s) and leaves.
