Talk about anti-climax! I'd been trying to guess how it would end for the past few episodes. At first I was thinking maybe Christopher would end up killing Tony, but when then he goes and dies. Then with this war between Tony and Phil kicked off and it looked like Tony might go out in a blaze of glory, but I never expected the ending we got.
It's all very well for David Chase to say he was trying to mirror real life, which doesn't have neatly wrapped up endings, but this is a TV series, it's meant to be an escape from real life.
I'm sure I'm not the only person to feel cheated by this ending.

I'm really just going to hit three points that have been discussed very frequently
1) Tony dies. The black out is just like the conversations they had about death, that everything goes black and you can't hear a sound.
2) Nothing notable happens, the Sopranos finish their dinner and life goes one. Especially since the last words we hear are "don't stop." It tells you that Tony has seen alot and done alot, the deaths he has witnessed and everything else will just add to who he is, a psychopath. He goes on in his life and things continue to be fortuitous for him and his family.
3) It's a set up for a movie. I really hope this is the case. It has also been discussed that when the DVD for the final season comes out that it will contain alternate endings, I find this unlikely, but you can bet that I'll scoop that up the second it comes out.
I thought the final episode was great. We see alot of things tied up. Phil gets capped (that may just tell you right away that the rest of the crew, including Tony, are safe), AJ finally figures out his life again, has a model girlfriend and is on the road to success, Meadow has alot of options including marriage and a potentially lucrative career in law. Tony can now operate safely with NY again without the craziness of Phil Leotardo. It wrapped things up, but obviously had alot less shock effect or concrete tie ups of loose ends than most of us wanted.
I'm just glad that the ending wasn't like Tony waking up from the coma and the last season being all a dream.

Yes i agree the last episode as a whole sucked, when considering it was the very last episode ever. However upon watching it a second time thanks to the greatest invention ever TiVo there are two ways to look at the ending.
The first being: Tony was killed. There were four people in that resturant that would have wanted Tony dead. The two black guys; hired by Tony's mother but got him in the ear. The trucker; The brothter of the trucker that was killed by Christopher. Lastly the guy that went to the bathroom; cant remember his name but that was Phils nephew, he was at one of the meetings between Tony and Phil.
Then theres the screen goes black and you hear nothing.. If you aremember Tony and Bobby had a conversation in like season two about what its like when you die and one of them said "Everything goes black and you dont hear anything." this was revisited in the lakehouse episode. When everyone walked in you heard the chimes and music. All but when Meadow walked in, you heard nothing and it went black... Being that Tony is dead!
Then theres the other way to look at it... the writers couldnt figure out how to end it so they just gave up and left it to us to think of why they ended it the way they did...

I feel cheated, too. I think there could have been a lot more excitement in the last episode. And that the ending could have been an actual ending. I could see that kind of ending if it was just the end of season, with a lead-in for the next season but come on now!!!!

This has been the subject of many questions the last few days, with many answers most people not liking the ending.
I was stunned Sunday night also, but since letting the ending set in awhile, I think I get it a little more.
I am not so mad and I am glad I get to decide what happens to the "family".

IT is a set up for a movie. Just like X files. Maybe 2 or 3 years down the road. Just my guess

ok listen guys...u gotta wach the end of the episode again and wach closely...here is wat ull c... when tony walks into the diner he looks at himself sitting down at the table...u can be sure of this b/c he is wearing different clothes when he sits down...i dont no wtf that means...
in previous seasons it had been told to us that tony's dad
died just as his daughter (janus) walked in... if u watch closely u will see janus walk in shortly after tony sits down...this is used to
signify the possibility of that happening again...then u will c the sports store owner who tony destroyed walk in wearing a brown kinda hunting jacket... he is the guy that a couple seasons ago got into gambling trouble with tony and tony took over his store...
HE IS THE 1 WHO WACKS TONY...he comes in and sits down hunched over...hiding his eyes as not wanting to be noticed...and alas..."u probly dont even here it when it happens rite?" (this is bobby talking to tony in the 1st episode of the season...tony had this flashback as he was laying down in the last episode... there would be no reason to have had that in unless it had some huge significance)... and finally... tonys daughter walking in to c her dad get shot just as janus did so many years ago... u hear the bell of her walking in and then
blackness... nuthing...
it signifies the neverending cycle of the soprano family...aj will become tony...meadow will become janus...carmela will become livia (tonys mom)...and cycle of violence goes on and on and on....absolutlely amazing...i HATED the ending at first...but when i wached it again...and understood it...it is really the most amazing ending possible for the show...we really would not have been satisfied with the boring u c tony git shot ending... this was priceless...remember..this was not an action show...it was a drama about a FAMILY
and this my friend is what the ending was all about
