i remember from psychology a 3 step process where you act/react to something that is going to happen, then you do something about it, and later on you get exhausted and give up (sometimes get sick, like when you study really hard). what is this model called?

Hi,
Could it be Operant Conditioning? This is a term Skinner used to describe the effects of the consequences of a particular behaviour on the future occurrence of that behaviour.
There are FOUR types of Operant Conditioning however not three: Positive Reinforcement, Negative Reinforcement, Punishment and Extinction. Positive and Negative Reinforcement strengthens behaviour. Punishment and Extinction weaken Behavour. In Extinction for instance the behaviour is weakened by the consequence of not experiencing a positive condition or stopping a negative condition.

sounds like you're talking about general adaptation syndrome (GAS) which is a predictable sequence of reactions - alarm stage, resistance stage, and exhaustion stage.
