Thanks for this great question. You gave me an idea for a class I might teach: Words and Drugs.

You would probably like Girl Interrupted but even before that there was an excellent book about a teenager with psychological problems called "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden." It's excellent.

For drugs, read "A Million Little Pieces" by James Fry

Oh there is one more book called "Smashed" about a college freshman who becomes an alcoholic.

Leaving Las Vegas by John O'Brien. He was an alcoholic who ended up killing himself. This is the basis for the movie of the same name starring Nicholas Cage and Elizabeth Shue. As a matter of fact, I liked to movie better, which is very rare.

If you like books like that, check out the books by Chuck Palahniuk. He's all about included drugs and their uses while telling the story. Invisible Monsters and Survivor are both especially good!

There are two that I think are really good. I'm not sure of either author, but the titles are "Fu#ked" (there's no # in the real title) and Generation Slut. The second one was written by a guy just out of highschool.
