A period is one name for the monthly bleeding or menstrual cycle of reproductive aged women. The period happens because pregnancy did not happen and the lining of the uterus, which got thick with blood to prepare for pregnancy, is lost because it is not needed. Because of the bleeding the lining becomes thin and needs to be repaired by the body. More hormones will make the lining thick to prepare again to become pregnant. The whole point of having periods is to be able to get pregnant. Blood and tissue build up in the inside of the uterus to get ready for pregnancy. If pregnancy does not happen then the hormones drop and bleeding begins. A woman loses about 2-4 tablespoons (25-60 ml) of blood each month. Ten percent of women lose 80 ml or more blood with each period and anemia (low blood count) can result.

"having a period" means ovulating.
a period means time.
so when a girl has their time, it means that they are ovulating.
ovulating means where a girl or woman has an egg released each month.
this results in a lot of blood exiting the vagina
girls use tampons (inserted manually) or sanitary towels to soak up all the blood.
a period lasts between 3-9 days, and yes, it is non-stop bleeding for days on end.
a few facts
~ the egg is only released if it is unfertilized, to fertilize it you have to have sexual intercourse with a male (have sex) to have a baby.
~ people usually get periods at around 11 years of age, although it is known to have started in people as young as 7
~ once you get your period, it stays with you for the rest of your life until you reach the menopause
hope this helped.

First, calm down. Second, you should be asking your mother this question....not a bunch of strangers. Your "period" is your menstrual cycle. When you are in puberty, you will begin to ovulate (make eggs). When the eggs are not "fertilized" (meaning since you won't be having sex--you won't be getting pregnant) they pass out of you. You will have blood coming from your vagina. I know....gross. But we ALL have it. No idea when it will start. I started mine when I was 9 (BIG surprise) and I still have it at 42. You will probably get some clear, sticky discharge coming from your vagina before it starts. That's when you need to start wearing panty liners so when it does start, you won't have blood in your pants.
