College for most people is one of the greatest investments they'll ever make

it can also be a pinful mistake. you can invest all that money you have and create your own company. people sell us the idea of college because it is a business. we dont need a degree to tell us we are educated, one way or another with or without a diploma we still have the same skills and abilities, college does not provides us with happiness. we can be a well rounded- educated janitor without help of college. hey college is good , but is not the only option, its not the end of the world if we miss one semester, so what if we have a 2.0 gpa? the important thing is that we learn the stuff for life right?

But-

You will gain many new skills and knowledge in college. I don't know about you, but I wasn't born with the knowledge of how to repair an airplane engine or how to diagnose a disease. I agree that if your life dream is to become a janitor, then you probably don't need college for that. But for the rest of us, college is the right choice to make.

There are options. You could become an entrepenour, start your own successful business and become rich -- and you can count the number of people you will ever personally know who succed in doing that on one hand. You can seek and become satisfied with all the jobs for which a high school education is all that is needed. That is still actually the majority of the population and many are satisfied even though they make little. There are tech schools which many pursue but that is a short hand form of college.

So, unless you are already independently wealthy, the option left is college. For most, being there is a lot less stressful than what they go through to get there. Basically, between the ages of 18 and 22 and for many beyond that age, you get to go away to a community where you have no parents, everyone around you is the same age as you are and they are all single, your only job is to go to class 15 to 16 hours a week and study 20 or so hours (some do more, many less), and you get to spend huge amounts of time discussing the meaning of life, and, when not doing so, partying your brains out. To me, for those in that age group, that beats the hell out of working a 9-5 job instead.

So the choice is up to you....

-YES
-NO

(dont let me influence you that this depends on how your life will be made up though for the rest of your life.. *wink wink*)

So whats best for you, you should do it..

I got my bachelor's degree in one area and found that I hate working in it and have moved onto a totally different career (and am working on my master's for my new career). I think college is not necessarily about the education, it's about the experience. I don't think most people are mature enough at age 18 to go out on their own. College is a great way to find responsibility, nobody is there to tell you what to do, but yourself. It creates discipline and allows for exploration of the self. It's also a great way to make new friends. For personal growth reasons, I would go to college. Besides, if you want to do more than medical assisting, like go into nursing, you will need some sort of degree. Besides, college degrees usually mean you get paid more!

Many economists have likened University to the Stadium phenomenon. If everyone is sitting at the stadium, it pays for you to stand up to get a better view.

By the same token. In a nation where most people do not have a college degree. It pays to get one.

But in the stadium if EVERYONE stands up to get a better view, no one is any better off than when they were sitting down. In fact they are WORSE off because now they are not comfortable.

In education - as more and more people get degrees, the value of having a degree in and of itself drops.

The only time this would not be true would be when the degree actually contributes more to society - aka increases the wealth of society. As in say an engineering degree.

But most degrees are just fluff. Like psychology or 90% of business degrees. And some are outright lies like Ethnic studies and Sociology.

This is not to say that on an individual level, not getting a degree is a good thing. Society overvalues the degree, and a lone individual can do nothing about it but play along. This is called the signalling mechanism. A degree signals to employers that you hold minimum standards. But this signally should have been done by setting high standards in High School. Problem is in our fascist egalitarian society - to set high standards in High school would of course mean some would fail. Somehow our leaders have decided that watering down standards just so everyone can have higher self esteem is somehow an answer.

But most degrees themselves adds no value to society and in fact by forcing people to waste 4 years of time and loads of money...actually impoverish society.

You will most likely get paid more if you get a bachelors but associates is worth while. It is when you go to a four year college and come to find out that all your degree is good for is serving at a restaurant...that's when you think your 35 grand could have been put to better use LOL! The health field is always hiring and that is a fact...go head and get educated! Good luck to you!

It is not a waste to go to college. If you don't want to go four years, go two. It is always good to have a degree because you don't know what you may want to do in the future. Besides that, if you decide later to go back to college you will already have some credits.

Many people have high paying jobs who didn't go to college, but it is usually because they have worked very hard in the field they are in. Sometimes they enter on a low position and work their way up or they have natural skills that are marketable.

Going down the dangerous road of assuming...I am going to assume you are speaking from a financial aspect. Check this link out:

It is a little old but the message is still applicable...it pays to go to school in the long run on average.

There are a lot of other great reasons to go, but the most important one is you want to. Don't let any one discourage you from going to school. If you want to go then GO!

For what it is worth, to anyone coming out of highschool or in their early 20s I would advise you to strongly consider it. I am 36 and I wish I would have gone earlier in life. It is much more difficult to go to school with a family and other responsibilities. To those my age and older you can do it and you'll be proud of yourself once you do. I am 6 classes away from my Bachelors at UF; I graduate next April! :-)

Good Luck!!!

I can't imagine who you're talking to. If you want to get anywhere in life, you absolutely must go to college. If you want to have low-level, low-paying jobs for the rest of your life, then don't go to college. Only you can decide what kind of future you want. Even if you eventually marry and have children, they'll be children of an uneducated parent. Is that what you really want?

Feeding your mind is never a waste. If you feel that this is right for you than go ahead. Ultimately you must be happy in whatever you do.
