I have a 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix SE. The back brakes seem to be having trouble. It first started everytime I would go in reverse they would make a really loud noise and then go away when I pressed the brake. Then the back brakes would start squealling when I WASN'T pressing the brakes and then go away when I came to a complete stop. This would happen randomly or when I hit a large bump/pot hole. Now when I go in reverse it is hard to move the steering wheel. I don't know if that is related to the brakes or not. Anyway.. I would like to know what is exactly wrong with my brakes and about how much it would cost to get it fixed. I'm on a low budget right now. Also.. It is harder to stop (takes longer etc). I don't know much about cars so any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Also. I just got new rotors about 2 years ago and was told that they should be fine... but no one has actually looked at them. The car doesn't squeal when the breaks are actually being pressed either.

Your rear brakes are drum brakes, if you know someone who can do them the pads are only about $20-$25. If the drums are gouged sometimes they can be turned on a lathe another $20 each if not, go to a junk yard and get used drums about 10-15 each. Job takes about an hour and is not that hard. If not check with Aamco, or Pep boys, or a local mechanic should be able to get done for around $150

If your pressing that hard and nothing is happening most likely your looking at a bad master cylinder. If you need pads as well and at least the rotors turned $400 isn't going to cover it. The a/c wont have anything to do with the brakes though. A basic 4 wheel brake job, pads and rotors turned will run you around $300 at a shop, If the master is bad your looking at another $200-$250. I would worry about the brakes first and then the a/c later when you have the money. Now if you want some driveway hero (claims he's a mechanic but works at wal mart) to work on your car you can get it done for $400. But the quality of the work will be questionable, the fact that if theres any problems your completely screwed and left trying to figure out how to come up with more money to fix it will all be matters to deal with. Take it to a small repair shop and have them do the work, they will be cheaper than a large chain type of shop and more honest with you as well.

Sounds like you wore your brakes down to the metal. You are getting metal on metal contact and most likely destroyed your rotors and or drums. You need a complete brake job now. Your looking at around 150 to 200 per WHEEL. At the very least it is going to cost money to take it somewhere to have them look at the problem. Take it to someone you trust or you'll get hosed.

Not even the expert repair technician who removes your rear wheels to check the brakes will know what he's going to find until he actually does the work. New rear shoes and drums should cost about $275 total installed including the parking brake adjustment.

A good brake job should range from $300 to $750 dollars depending on if rotors are needed, along with pads. If calipers are needed you are looking at the higher end of my price range about $700.

Your brakes are gonna be between $30-$40 bucks.
No big deal. The prob. is it sounds like you are going to need rotors. You have probably worn your breaks down to far.
If you know how to check yourself, pop 'em off real quick and check. Otherwise have someone else do it. Oh and that price is for doing it youself. Its real easy if you don't mind getting your hands dirty. Oh, and you need tools and a jack.

If you have rear disc on the back the noise your hearing is a wear indicater thats built on the brake pad itself its just letting you know its time to change your brakes. i would get someone to check all your brakes to make sure it is the rear because the sound can fool you it may sound like the rear and it could be the front. and for cost you can get pads for around 20 dollars
