The CATV people need to do some feed changes on your feed line. Once those changes are done, then a CATV modem of the appropriate style for your signal will work.

The CATV people would not be so naive as to send Internet signal without being able to get revenue for it.

No, You can use any cable modem though to have the ability to receive internet. You will have to call your cable provider to have them add internet service to your account. They do not need to come out in order for this to be done. Once it is added to your account you can get the internet going yourself. Tell the customer service rep you would like to do a self install. This will save an upgrade and installation fee. All you need to do is give them the cable mac of the modem and you will be set. Hope this helps!

No actually you won't. Most cable modems are MAC authenticated on a Access Server. The MAC address is hardcoded to the port the cable hooks up to and must be preloaded into the access server or you will never be granted permission to put traffic through the access server and thus to the Internet. pretty darn hard to steal Internet service. Truth is most ISP's keep the DSLAM info close so that hackers won't know where to start. Lot's of them are now using preprogrammed username/pwd in the modem to hit the access server.

you need to sign up for internet from you cable provider otherwise it won't work. A simple phone call and they will set you up and get you up and running. Assuming you will pay 40 bucks a month or so...

No once the modem is hooked up they have to for lack of better terms ping it and make it viable, or registered and assign you an IP.
