Many of the people of Liberia are descended from freed US slaves, who were either sent, or emmigrated to their "promised land" in Africa. However they often did not integrate into African society, and referred to themselves as Americans (and were thought of as such by native Africans and colonial officers in nearby Sierra Leone). Often the Americo-Liberians considered themselves superior to the native-Liberians, and there was much conflict between the two.

????....It's obviously the contrary! The fact that the freed African-American slaves were sent there doesn't mean there were no indigenous people there; furthermore, those deported to the US from Africa were Africans, so it doesn't really matter that then they became Americans. Africa is their motherland, the land they're proud of. A great wonderful continent indeed.
